Strips that Sizzle Quilt Workshop with Janet Goddard from Patchwork Patterns
Saturday 5th September – 10am – 4pm – £50 – Take a pile of fabrics in one colour and cut lots of strips. Add some plain fabric and some clever stitch and flip. The resulting design makes great secondary patterns when stitched together.
I have just used two colours in this quilt – red and white; however I have tried it with multiple coloured scraps and it works just as well. The good thing about it is that it is a good way of using up fabric that perhaps you don’t like so much as you only see small strips of it! This quilt can be as big or small as you wish so if you wish to make it larger you will need to adjust the fabric quantities accordingly.
Students need to be able to use a rotary cutter and stitch an accurate ¼” seam.
Requirements:
The requirements listed below are sufficient to make a small quilt measuring approx. 42” square.
- *1 ½ m light background fabric.
- *Approx. 8 fat quarters of fabric or lots of scraps in a single colour or as desired.
- *A 6 ½” square plastic ruler. (please do not buy one especially as you can use an ordinary ruler)
- Five plastic bags or little baskets to put each of the measured strips in
- *Neutral thread for piecing
- *Fabric marking pencil/pen
- *Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
- Sewing machine
- Usual sewing equipment
To finish the quilt but not needed on the day:
- *5” fabric cut across the width for the inner border
- *13 “ fabric cut across the width for the outer border
- *¼ m fabric for the binding (or use the left over fabric scraps)
- *Wadding 46” square
- *Backing fabric 46” square
If you would like to cut some of the coloured fabric strips before the day to get you started please cut the following:
- Cut 10 strips each measuring 1” and 1 ¼”
- Cut 15 strips each measuring 1 ½”, 1 ¾” and 2”
*Can be purchased at Poppy Patch
