Stained Glass Window Patchwork Bag Workshop with Janet Goddard from Patchwork Patterns

Saturday 5th July – 10 – 4pm – £50 – Stained glass patchwork involves putting fabric pieces (glass) onto a background and stitching black strips (leading) over the raw edges. It is a very effective and eye catching technique.

We will be working on a small piece of stained glass patchwork in the style of Piet Mondrian. Lots of tips and techniques will be covered along the way. Once the block has been completed you will have the option to stitch the block into a tote bag. The tote bag is roomy, has a contrast fabric lining with pocket, is softly padded with wadding and is finished with bag feet and fabric handles.

Students need to be able to use a rotary cutter and stitch an accurate ¼” seam.

Requirements:

The requirements listed below are sufficient to make one bag that has a finished size of 20 x 16 x 4in:

For the stained glass block:

*1(13in) square light background fabric

*4in WOF strips red, yellow and blue fabrics (or colours of your choice)

*1(15in) square black fabric

¼ m heatnbond light or bondaweb

*Black thread

*Bias bars

*Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat

Sewing machine with an open toe foot and a walking foot if you have one

*Usual sewing equipment including a marking pencil

*Optional – small iron and mat

For the tote bag:

*¾ m non-directional fabric for the outer bag and straps

*¾ m fabric for the lining and pocket

*2(20 ½in) squares and 2(1 ¼ x 25in) strips of single sided fusible wadding

*Four metal bag feet

• 1(3 ½ x 12in) piece of decovil or card or plastic for the bag base

Optional – If you wish to cut the fabrics for the bag before you come:

From the outer bag fabric cut:

• 1(20 ½ x 12 ½ in) rectangle
• 2(6 ½ x 20 ½in) rectangles
• 2(2 ½  x 20 ½in) strips
• 2(4 ½ x 12 ½in) rectangles
• 2(3 ½ x 25in) strips

From the lining fabric cut:

• 2(20 ½ x 20in) rectangles
• 1(6 x 20in) rectangle
