Monthly Patchwork with Janet Goddard

This is a monthly class that continues on mostly the 3rd Friday of each month

Friday 16th October – 10am – 3.30pm – £39 for each month – This class is suitable for those with some experience of sewing, from beginners through to intermediate patchworkers. If you’re unsure about if this is the right class for you, please give us a call or come along to a session and give it a try. It’s a fun and informal class where you will work at your own pace, to help build your patchworking skills and introduce you to the variety of techniques available. Techniques covered range from skill-builder patchwork blocks to ensure you have the core skills required, through to more complex patchwork, English paper piecing, foundation paper piecing and appliqué to name a few.

Janet is an experienced tutor with lots of hints and tips and will be on hand every step of the way. Advice will be given by the tutor each month on requirements for the following month.
Please note, a working knowledge of how to use your sewing machine is essential.

Forward dates are: 20/11, 15/01, 19/02, 12/03, 16/04, 21/05 and 11/06.

Requirements for this month:

Three Pocket Phone Bag – This three pocket phone bag is perfect for when you are out and about. The pockets are roomy enough for a phone, some keys and cards. The added strap can be worn cross body so is great from a security point of view or for dog walking.

I have made the bag in cotton fabrics and also with a linen outer and cotton lining and it works well with both fabric types.

You will be able to make two or more bags during the day.

Requirements:

The requirements listed below are sufficient to make one bag so please increase the quantities for extra bags:

*1 fat quarter non directional fabric for the outer bag

*1 fat quarter fabric for the lining and contrast flap

*½ m single sided fusible, mid weight interfacing

Fastening mechanism such as press studs or velcro or button and button hole or snap fastener

*Neutral thread for piecing

*Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat

Sewing machine (1/4 in piecing/patchwork foot if you have one)

Usual sewing equipment including a marking pen/pencil and a tool/chopstick for turning out corners

Strap or webbing with swivel bolts or clips

20th November class:

There will be a choice of two projects this month – The Improv Christmas Tree Wall Hanging or the Modern Christmas Wall Hanging. Students need to bring materials for one of the projects:

Improv Christmas Tree with Janet Goddard ©

This is a small Christmas tree which is stitched in an improvisational way. It uses the techniques of raw edge applique and is quilted and appliqued at the same time using the walking foot. It finishes at 16 x 22in so is perfect for a small wall hanging, cushion or table centre.

I have stitched my Christmas tree using just green and red fabric scraps but it would work with any other Christmas fabric combination.

Requirements:

*1(16 x 22in) rectangle of background fabric, wadding and backing fabric. (If you are able to layer these together with *505 spray or pins or tacking before the day it would be helpful)

*(3in) square brown fabric for tree trunk

*Red fabric scraps

*4in WOF red fabric for the binding

*Green fabric scraps – (13in) is the longest scrap you will need

*(6in) square of heatnbond or bondaweb

*Thread to match fabrics eg green, red, brown

10 red buttons

1 star button

*Red embroidery thread

*Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat

Sewing machine (walking foot is essential)

*Marking pencil

Usual sewing equipment

*NB Cotton or Cotton/Polyester mix wadding works best for this project.

Modern Christmas Wall Hanging with Janet Goddard

Stitch a modern Christmas Tree wall hanging. The wall hanging features trees in different sizes, stags and baubles appliqued on to a pieced background. The techniques of raw edge applique and quilt as you go are used in this project. The project could also be used as a table runner.

I have used a subtle grey/sage colourway but it would work in any Christmas fabrics.

Finished size: 17 x 23in.

Requirements:

The requirements listed below are sufficient to make one wall hanging.

*1 long quarter of light background fabric (you may be able to use a fat quarter but it would need to be 21in wide)

*1 long quarter of a second background fabric slightly darker than the first (you may be able to use a fat quarter but it would need to be 21in wide)

*Fat quarters and fabric scraps for the trees, tree trunks, baubles, stars and stags

*1m heatnbond or bondaweb

*18 x 24in rectangle of backing fabric and wadding (preferably a cotton or 80/20 cotton wadding as it will be ironed)

*6in fabric for binding

*Thread to match fabrics to be appliqued

Sewing machine with applique foot and walking foot

*3in square of template plastic

*Marking pen/pencil and usual sewing equipment

*Pins or spray baste (optional)
