Kantha is a type of stitching that originated in India many centuries ago, specifically in West Bengal, Odisha and what is now Bangladesh. It consists primarily of running stitch, although other stitches (such as back stitch) are also used. Typically it was used to sew saris together in layers to form simple quilts. The patterns used would depict representational images or geometric shapes.
Kantha stitching is also referred to as kantha embroidery or kantha quilting.
