We would like to invite you to come and relax at one of our courses where there is no rush.  You will be among like minded people in a well lit converted barn with a maximum of fourteen students. Our teachers are warm and friendly with an abundance of skill and knowledge that can help your day flow with ease. Help yourself to tea and coffee throughout the day. We have courses to suit all skill levels from beginners to the more advanced.

Cancellation policy – All courses must be paid in full at the time of booking. If you are unable to come please let us know as soon as possible as we may be able to move you to another course. If you can give us more than 14 days notice we would be happy to give you a refund less a small charge for administration of £5. Unfortunately if there is less than 14 days notice we are unable to give any refunds. There will be a small charge of £5 for any alteration or cancellation on bookings.

Social Sewing Days

If you fancy a bit of ‘me time’ come and join one of our social sewing days. They run on every Wednesday, Thursday and the last Saturday of the month maybe bring some cake and enjoy unlimited supply of tea and coffee. There is also space to sit outside on a beautiful day. The days are £9.50 per day from 9:30am until 3:30pm, if you fancy joining us later please feel free to. Places are limited on the Saturday group. Improvers Workshop with Jan Shepherd

Saturday 12th October – 10-4pm – £30 per day – Come along and learn a variety of techniques, from basic blocks to more intricate designs . You can make any size project that will fit into your home, from a Lap and Bed Quilt, a bed runner, finish a project you need help with or even make a bag, it’s up to you.  This is a class to expand your patchwork techniques whilst working on one of Jan’s projects or one of your own. Places are strictly limited. Book yours now!

This course runs on a monthly basis.

Improvers to Patchwork and Quilting Workshop with Jan Shepherd at Poppy Patch


One Stitch at a Time (Therapeutic Stitching)

 Tuesday 15th October  – 10-12.30 pm – £3 (includes tea and coffee) – This is a therapeutic group for people who have depression, anxiety, stress, have had a bereavement or have general mental health issues. The group meets once a month for three hours to sew together. You can bring along a hand sewing project or learn a thread based one. Beginners to stitching can purchase a small hand sewn project for £5.

Poppy Patch is located in a rural setting which is quiet and peaceful. You will stitch in a light and airy room on the first floor of a barn conversion. There is ample parking and the shop is very near to a bus stop. This group always meets on the third Tuesday of every month.

This project is being endorsed by Wellingborough ‘MIND’ and ‘Depression Alliance’, Northampton.


Dressmaking Afternoon with Caroline Hawkins

Friday 25th October – 1 – 4pm – £20 per session – Back to basics sewing for the novice dressmaker. This guided class will take you through the steps required to follow a pattern and create a simple wearable garment and beyond. Choose a simple pattern and fabric then Caroline will teach you how to understand the pattern envelope and cut out your pattern. Dependent on how quickly you get on you will be taught measuring, fitting and construction of the garment. Returning for further classes is likely.

A sewing machine is required for this class. Further dates are 29th November 2019 and February 28th 2020.

A Quilters Life with Janine Pope

Saturday 26th October – 10  – 4pm – £50 – This is Janine’s beautiful new quilt. The ladies featured are shopping for fabric, getting help carrying their enormous amount of equipment to workshops and making lots of gorgeous quilts. Janine will show you how to draw and of course help you loads to draw your stitched pictures in your own style too. The workshop is a relaxed day where you will achieve some beautiful results quickly.

The Book ‘I Was Just Thinking’ with Janine Pope

Sunday 27th October – 10 – 4pm – £50 – This fabulous book stands about 15″x7″ folded and then unfolds into this unbelievable concertinaed wall of Janine’s memories. If you join Janine on this workshop you can make any size that suits you and with all your special memories. I have never seen anything like this before.

Beginners / Improvers to Patchwork and Quilting with Jan Shepherd

Friday 1st November – 10-4pm – £30 per day – Come along and learn new a variety of techniques, from basic blocks to more intricate designs to make a sampler quilt . Saturday 9th November – 10 – 4pm – £50 – On the day you will print a picture using Thermofax screens. If you haven’t used these before then it is a great way to learn about simple printing techniques that can be achieved on a kitchen table at home. You will look at composition, colour mixing and embellishment through stitch. You should go home with a beautiful picture which is ready for framing and hanging on the wall.

The morning will be spent printing and the afternoon stitching to embellish and enhance your picture The tutor will bring the Thermofax screens and printing inks.

3 Dimensional Stumpwork with Jane Cobbett

Saturday 16th November – 10 – 4pm – £50– This can be a stand alone course or a follow on from her 1st course which was ran earlier in the year on Ribbon Embroidered Hexagons including Flowers, Bugs & Butterfly’s – In this traditional 3 dimensional Stumpwork  workshop you will learn how to make beautiful and realistic designs. You will create and learn how to stitch one complete hexagon, Beaded Berry with needle lace leaves and a spider etc. You will start or possibly finish a second hexagon and will receive handouts for the final hexagon. These can either make mini pictures or be used in future textile projects.

There are some unusual  materials needed for this workshop, the easy bits will be in the requirements list for you to purchase. The specialist and expensive bits will be included in a pack for you to purchase on the day with small fee of between £3 to £5.

Saturday 23rd November – 10 – 4pm – £50 – Explore colour and texture in this fun, creative one-day workshop with Deborah Collum.  You will use a range of materials and techniques to create your own frame-able Secret Garden.

Porcelain Tea Light Holder and 3 Christmas Hanging Decorations All In A Day With Katie Almond

Saturday 7th December – 10 – 4pm – £65 – Just bring along an apron for this fun workshop. Illustrator and ceramicist Katie launches the Christmas season with 3 hanging porcelain decorations. Choose from Christmas puds, robins, Holly and stars. Add texture and coloured glazes to make your special decorations.

AND Be inspired by Katie’s samples and learn how to construct your very own porcelain tea light holder. We will cover hand-building techniques and surface decoration to create a unique and fully functioning tea light holder.

(There is an additional charge of £11.25 to be paid on the day to the tutor for the firing of your projects and the postage back to you).

Life Begins in the Garden with Janine Pope

Saturday 4th January – 10 – 4pm – £55 – This is Janine’s new quilt that she has designed while spending time in the garden this year. Janine will show you how to draw and of course help you loads to draw your stitched pictures in your own style too.  She specialises in machine drawing. Personalising afterwards is fun too, using your own style to add to the blocks. The workshop is a relaxed day where you will achieve some beautiful results quickly.

Stack and Whack with Helen Coverley

Saturday 1st February – 10 – 4pm – £35 – The Stack & Whack method involves taking rectangular pieces of fabric that have nearly identical prints. To make the Stack then Whack (cutting) pieces from this Stack and arranging them to create a kaleidoscope effect. This looks so effective. If you have never given it a go please come and join in. Choose a large bold print to make 12.5″ blocks.

Drawing with Plants with Anne Kelly

Saturday 14th March – 10 -4pm – £60 -Plants and botanical drawings can be a rich source of inspiration for textile artists and embroiderers. Using seasonal plants as source material, we will produce a small book form with lamination, collage, stitch and colour. Machine stitching is optional but the pieces started in the workshop can be embellished further by hand and machine .

Anne Kelly is a Kent based artist, author and tutor. She trained in Canada and at Goldsmiths College in London. She creates multilayered textile collages using vintage and reclaimed fabrics combined with machine and hand-stitching. She was artist in residence at the RHS partnered Sussex Prairie Garden in West Sussex in 2014, invited artist at the Prague Patchwork Meeting, World of Threads Festival in Canada three times, Quilt en Beaujolais and Les Aiguilles en Luberon. She was a featured artist gallery at the Knitting and Stitching Shows in the UK in 2016 and 2018. She has had two major exhibitions in Canada and Australia in 2019.

Anne writes for ‘Workshop on the Web’, textileartist.org blog, and has had articles published in ‘Embroidery’, ‘Stitch’, ‘the Quilter’, ‘Pretty Patches’ and many other journals in the UK, Europe and the USA, including ‘Cloth, Paper, Scissors’ and ‘Fiber Art Now’. Her three books for Batsford press have both been reprinted, the co-written ‘Connected Cloth’, solo ‘Textile Nature’ and ‘Textile Folk Art’.

Floral workshop (Bias cut silk ribbons) with Lorna Bateman

Saturday 21st March – 10 – 4pm – £60 – Extend your creative skills and work with Hanah bias-cut, pure silk ribbons to create a variety of flowers to form your own wreath, posy or floral bouquet as desired.  You will learn to make anemones, carnations, peonies and roses, amongst others. The stunning flowers are made freeform and then applied to the fabric. You will not complete your project in one day.

(A kit can be purchased on the day at a cost of £25, materials are not included in the price of the course)

Fabric Printing & Lampshade Making with Ria Rich 

Saturday 18th April – 10 4pm – £50 – Join Designer & Maker Ria Rich on her fabric printing and lampshade making day. You can design, print and create a fabulous lampshade to compliment your home. In this workshop you will learn various fabric printing techniques such stencils with screens, resists and stamps etc to create your design. A selection of fabrics will be available for you to experiment on, which will then be used to cover and construct, then customise with trims a 20cm drum lampshade, which is yours to take home.
(Materials are not included in this workshop but for just £10 Ria will provide everything you need, including stencils,  inks, fabrics for experimenting on and covering lampshade and any trims etc for customising at the end.  This is payable to Ria on the day).

Free Machine Embroidered Textiles with Anna Osborne from The Speculating Rook

Saturday 9th May – 10 – 4pm – £50 – Cushion fronts workshop with Anna –This workshop is about translating drawings into stitch, using a drawing or photograph and your sewing machine you will create an image using a variety of coloured thread. A day exploring different ways of mark making and using a selection of threads to build up texture and colour before assembling a purse approximately 20cm x 15cm. If you wish to make your design larger than the purse you may need to complete at home.

An ability to draw is advantageous but not essential, Anna can teach you.

You will need a sewing machine that can be adapted for free motion embroidery; the teeth will either drop or if it’s an older model you may have a plate that covers the teeth.  If neither of these, then you can cover the teeth with tape. You will also need a free motion foot for your machine, sometimes known as a darning foot. A universal version is available if you can’t find one for your machine.

Quilt As You Go with Helen Coverley

Friday 15th May – 10 – 4pm – £35 – This is a ‘one off’ class where Helen will teach you an alternative technique to making quilts. If you have ever tried layering up a quilt before and know how it can ‘fight back’ when putting it through your sewing machine to quilt, you might want to try the ‘Quilt as You Go’ method of joining the patches together instead. Helen will show you three different techniques to Quilt as You Go.

If there is any space Sam will be learning this technique!

Oil Cloth Bags with Helen Coverley

Saturday 16th May – 10 – 4pm – £35 – Helen will provide a selection of bags for you to choose from, all made from oilcloth. You will need to purchase a teflon foot for your sewing machine and the oil cloth (make sure it is cotton backed).

This is a great class where you will make a lovely bag for yourself or a gift. Choose a small bag to make and make more than one!

Hand Applique with Jane Cobbett

Saturday 23rd May – 10 4pm – £50 – During this workshop you will learn several hand applique techniques from the simplest Raw Edge to the more traditional Needleturn.

There will be a selection of early Victorian quilts to study for inspiration and patterns etc to make several technique blocks. These completed blocks can then be used for cushions, bags etc

Bees in my Garden Ribbon Embroidery with Jane Cobbett

Saturday 20th June- 10 – 4pm – £50 – This can be a stand alone course for £50 where you will learn three of the hexagons or there are follow on courses to complete the whole picture.  (The further courses are discounted at £85 for 2 days or £120 for all three days). In this workshop you will learn the Lavender and Butterfly, Catkins and Dragonfly and Hollyhock and Bee. They are traditional, beautiful and realistic designs. You will create and learn how to stitch one complete hexagon, starting with Hollyhocks, Catkins and Lavender. You will start or possibly finish a second hexagon and will receive handouts for the final hexagon. These can either make mini pictures or be used in future textile projects.

The follow on courses will teach you Stumpwork on Saturday 15th August. Anyone who has attended both or one of the previous workshops will also receive general help with elements they may not have completed.

Design, Print & Customise your own cushion covers with Ria Rich

Saturday 19th September – 10 – 4pm – £50 – Join Designer & Maker Ria Rich where you can design, print and customise a cushion cover to compliment your home. In this all day workshop you will learn how to print a design using stencils, screens and fabric printing inks, then customise with hand painting, pompoms, trims and tassels to complete your work. You can embroider your cushion too.
(Materials are not included in this workshop but for just £5 Ria will provide everything you need, including stencils,  inks, fabrics for experimenting on and a ready made cushion cover to print on, any trims etc for customising at the end.  This is payable to Ria on the day).

Embroidery And Applique Day With Jessie Chorley

Saturday 10th October – 10-4pm – £60 – Jessie Chorley is an East London based designer, maker, tutor, author and shop owner specializing in hand Embroidery Collage and Applique. At the heart of her work is hand stitching, and traditional embroidery combined with needle turned appliqué techniques. She combines her passion for collecting ware possible into her embroidered stories and small detailed patchworks.I use my needle and thread to both secure items in place as well as for creating line and detail. My needle and thread are my drawing tools that allow me to create my scenes and stories directly in and on to my chosen fabrics and papers. I use various embroidery flosses combined with favourite vintage threads to illustrate my chosen imagery and words directly on to and in to my selected and usually pre-used fabrics, papers and found objects”. 

Today’s workshop will be a general embroidery and appliqué day, covering all of Jessie’s techniques, creating your own story using her style of appliqué and embroidery. Stitched text and lettering will also be covered. You can purchase a kit from Jessie at an additional cost of £10. They would include hand cut fabric appliqué shapes. A linen backing fabric and some assorted fabric scraps plus she will bring all my own embroidery flosses and other embroidery threads for all participants to use during the workshop. Jessie will also bring two large sampler books that hold all her embroidery samples plus some other stitched works to inspire you.
