Beginners Patchwork class with Jane Glover

We continue to only take eight students at this time.

This is a monthly class that continues on the 3rd Friday of each month.

Friday 18th February – 9.30am – 3pm – £37.50 for each month – This class is designed for beginners in patchwork and is kept small to ensure you get time with our tutor. Working at your own pace, this informal and supportive class will help you to build your patchwork skills.  Over the months, you will have the opportunity to make a range of patchwork blocks that demonstrate your skills development with an option to make them into a table or bed runner, sampler quilt or cushion.

The course covers using appropriate tools to measure and cut accurately, how to sew a ¼” seam, a range of patchwork techniques, how to join blocks together, adding borders and binding and basic quilting skills.

A working knowledge of how to use your sewing machine is essential.

You may sign up to just one day but this class continues over the next six months and possibly beyond, the cost will be £37.50 per class.

If you are completely new to sewing/patchwork, please talk to Sam or Mary prior to booking as there may be an option to join an introductory session first

Stories in Stitch With Jessie Chorley

We are running this course from Great Doddington Memorial Hall which is only a short walk away for more space during these uncertain times.

Saturday 9th April – 10-4pm – £75 – Jessie Chorley is a London-based textile artist, specialising in embroidery and paper crafts. Born in Kent in1980, she spent her childhood in North Wales, before moving to London to study for the BA in Fine Art Textile Practice at Goldsmiths College. While still a student, she chose to dedicate her life to making beautiful things by hand and, shortly after graduating, she set up her own business as a full-time designer and maker. Over time, she has also become an author, social artist and tutor, as well as running an independent shop/studio selling her work in East London from 2007 to 2021. Jessie now delivers workshops internationally at venues that include the V&A Museum and The Foundling Museum, both in London, the Bluecoat Display Centre, Liverpool and West Dean College, West Sussex.

Stories in stitch – This workshop focuses on my signature style of hand embroidered illustration. We will explore several stitching techniques, including couching, running, stem, seed and back stitch, as well as the use of hand stitched text. I will also help you get started with simple appliqué and patching.
The workshop will start with a short talk by me, Jessie. I will show you a selection of my original artwork and there will also be time for your questions. I will then direct you, both as a group and individually, as you embark on your journey of creating your own stitched story in my signature style.
Firstly, you will choose to work either on a flat, layered fabric panel, or to construct and work on a simple, folded fabric book, using appliqué and hand stitching as your main techniques. The natural fabric for both will be part of the kit that you will be given at the start of your workshop. This kit will also contain a selection of pre-cut fabric motifs, ready for you to appliqué directly on to your work.
I encourage you to enjoy this creative workshop, without focusing too much on finishing your work. Instead, I suggest you approach this day as an explorative, peaceful slow-stitching experience, embracing and learning new techniques while being inspired by my original artworks and materials that surround you. Bring your sketchbook and make notes to help you finish your work, if necessary, at home.

(Kit from Jessie at an additional cost of £15).

Fun with Wool – Needlefelt a Seagull with Michelle Hickman from Furzie

Saturday the 14th May – 10am – 4.30pm – £75 – Michelle lives in Gloucestershire and creates wool sculptures under the name of Furzie.  Furzie sculptures have been sold all over the world, with commissions to replicate people’s pets being particularly popular.  The sculptures are made by a technique called needle felting, using only wool and special needles. Although it has its roots in a centuries old form of cloth making, needle-felting is a relatively new art, an off-shoot of industrial felt-making from the nineteenth century.  The woollen fibres are bonded together using felting needles to form a material which can be made into 3-D shapes. Michelle started teaching others the craft six years ago, holding regular workshops at venues across the country.  She has now taught over 1800 people.

Needle-felting is a fascinating experience, watching creations taking a life and form of their own as you work.  It is a very intuitive and tactile craft.  Workshops are held in a very relaxed atmosphere – it’s been said that the laughs are as good as the course!

(Materials are not included – £10 payable to Michelle on the day to cover materials and needles)
