May

Freestyle Machine Embroidery with Julie Brand from Tigley textiles

Saturday 11th May – 10 – 4pm – £50 – Join Julie to learn the mystery of machine embroidery. This is now such a popular art form and can be done in so many different ways. Rather than make one finished piece and learn one technique, Julie aims to show you many ways that machine embroidery can be used with plenty of examples to inspire you. Suitable for beginners, sometimes even easier, as you have to forget everything you’ve previously learned about precision and just go with the flow.  You will need to  bring your own sewing machine, as long as you can drop the feed (or can cover the teeth with a plate) and have an embroidery foot.  Just bring yourself and your sense of humour, guaranteed to result in excited squeals from time to time! At the end of the day you will take away a stunning sampler showing various techniques. All the examples shown in these images have been made in one day by absolute beginners.

Learn how to: Drop the feed on your machine and “draw” using the thread, stitch with freedom- anywhere, any direction, use bondaweb to apply cut fabrics onto a background, add paint successfully, without the bleed, use  transfer pens, write words freehand, embroider using paper and card, be inspired to make your own designs and see how versatile and truly addictive this art form really is.

There would be a £5 charge for materials for and you would need to bring cotton and machines and a basic sewing kit.

Experience in machine embroidery required.

There will be additional £15 charge for the lampshade kit and you will need a basic sewing kit and sewing machine for this class.

Creative Machine Embroidery With Abigail Mill

You will need to bring along your own sewing machine, with your sewing box with threads, pins, scissors etc. You will also need to make sure that your sewing machine can be converted to ’Free motion machining’ by using a dawning food and lowering the feed dogs. I will run through exercises on machine tension, working with various threads, working with mixed fabrics, appliqué techniques, and preparation of fabrics for your final piece.

In the afternoon this is where the fun begins! Armed with the knowledge of the mornings sampling, this day is all about self development. The aim is to leave with a finished piece of embroidery that reflects your own style and colour palette. In order to do this you will need to be inspired by your own source materials. You will need to bring with you any photographs, post cards, sketches or greetings cards with inspiring imagery. I would also encourage you to bring along your collections of fabrics and trimmings for that personal touch.

If you would like to purchase a background piece they will be from £2-4 on the day or Abbi will bring a selection of her kits for you to purchase if you do not wish to do your own thing.
