Creative Machine Embroidery With Abigail Mill

Saturday 18th January – 10 – 4pm – £60 – On the morning Abbi will run through the basics of machine embroidery and get you set up on your machine ready to ’draw in sewing’. You will need to bring along your own sewing machine, with your sewing box with threads, pins, scissors etc. You will also need to make sure that your sewing machine can be converted to ’Free motion machining’ by using a dawning food and lowering the feed dogs. I will run through exercises on machine tension, working with various threads, working with mixed fabrics, appliqué techniques, and preparation of fabrics for your final piece.

In the afternoon this is where the fun begins! Armed with the knowledge of the mornings sampling, this day is all about self development. The aim is to leave with a finished piece of embroidery that reflects your own style and colour palette. In order to do this you will need to be inspired by your own source materials. You will need to bring with you any photographs, post cards, sketches or greetings cards with inspiring imagery. I would also encourage you to bring along your collections of fabrics and trimmings for that personal touch.

If you would like to purchase a background piece they will be from £2-4 on the day or Abbi will bring a selection of her kits for you to purchase if you do not wish to do your own thing.

GAIL PAN IS COMING ALL THE WAY FROM AUSTRALIA

Gail Pan is coming all the way from Australia to teach at Poppy Patch again this year. If you are a regular to the shop you know that we stock all of her patterns and have done for some time. I have made one of her bags and it is regularly in the shop attached to Mary!!! Her work is delightful and her teaching style is very relaxed. Gail lives on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia, at the foot of the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. Growing up in a home where sewing was always an important part of her life, it was only natural that she tried every craft there was! She has always had some kind of project in the works (sound familar)!

When her kids were little she made their clothes, and when they got too old for that, she moved on to patchwork. Her design business was born out of her habit of always adapting whatever she was working on until it becomes a new design altogether. In 2003, at the encouragement of some friends who were opening their own patchwork business, she began to design and release her own patterns and has been designing ever since! Gail teaches all over the world and gets great satisfaction and enjoyment from sharing her love of needle and thread.

Saturday 25th July – 10 – 5pm – There are only fourteen places available on each day. Her classes will be running from 10-5pm which includes an hour at the beginning for a show and tell of from Gail’s and a few freebies. There will be a chance to ask questions too.

The photographs below show three different patterns but Gail is designing more at this time so there will be a choice of four patterns on the day. You will choose one pattern to make on the day (the others are available to purchase if you so wish). The choices on this day are A Stitch in Time small project book, Just Bee Drawstring Bag, In the Blue Garden Sewing Folder and a NEW Table runner being designed at this time by Gail.

One day course is £75 which includes your one pattern to make on the day, gift bag and refreshments (cake included). If you book two days the cost is £140 and three days is £200.

September

Crazy Patchwork with Fiona Metcalfe

Saturday 5th September – 10 – 4pm – £50 – This workshop is to recycle and repurpose material remnants, ribbons and threads to construct a patch work picture, which can be cut back using appliqué methods and electorate stitching to add depth and embellish the image. This will be worked on a 25 x 25cm format or smaller if you prefer. Fiona will ask you think about colour, shape and design and begin to pin onto the backing material various material remnants and place these with an eye to composition.

Because appliqué methods are used, over laying colours can work very well when at a later stage these are cut back. Once all the patch work pieces are in place, the whole picture is covered with organza and then stitched into place with simple straight or zig -zag stitches to hold in place. Then the creative free machine embroidery begins enhancing the picture with more elaborate stitching and hand stitching and  if you choose embellishing, with beads or buttons. Some parts of the organza are cut back to reveal the images underneath and further reverse appliqué methods employed to create further depth and colour contrast.

You will go home with a beautiful picture, ready for framing and hanging on the wall!!

Embroidery And Applique Day With Jessie Chorley

Saturday 10th October – 10-4pm – £60 – Jessie Chorley is an East London based designer, maker, tutor, author and shop owner specializing in hand Embroidery Collage and Applique. At the heart of her work is hand stitching, and traditional embroidery combined with needle turned appliqué techniques. She combines her passion for collecting ware possible into her embroidered stories and small detailed patchworks.I use my needle and thread to both secure items in place as well as for creating line and detail. My needle and thread are my drawing tools that allow me to create my scenes and stories directly in and on to my chosen fabrics and papers. I use various embroidery flosses combined with favourite vintage threads to illustrate my chosen imagery and words directly on to and in to my selected and usually pre-used fabrics, papers and found objects”.

Today’s workshop will be a general embroidery and appliqué day, covering all of Jessie’s techniques, creating your own story using her style of appliqué and embroidery. Stitched text and lettering will also be covered. You can purchase a kit from Jessie at an additional cost of £10. They would include hand cut fabric appliqué shapes. A linen backing fabric and some assorted fabric scraps plus she will bring all my own embroidery flosses and other embroidery threads for all participants to use during the workshop.
